Oorlogswinter, wel aanwezig op de shortlist, werd uiteindelijk niet genomineerd. Martin Koolhovens oorlogsfilm legde het af tegen onder meer Das weisse Band en Un prophète.

Voor het eerst sinds 1943 zijn tien films genomineerd in de categorie Beste film. Naast Avatar en The Hurt Locker strijden onder meer Up van Pete Doctor en Bob Peterson, A Serious Man (Joel en Ethan Coen) en Inglourious Basterds (Quentin Tarantino) om het felbegeerde beeldje. Vijf van deze tien genomineerden vinden we ook terug in de categorie Beste regie. Cameron en Bigelow nemen het daarin op tegen Reitman (Up in the Air ), Daniels (Precious) en Tarantino.

Voor Beste acteur komen Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), George Clooney (Up in the Air), Colin Firth (A Single Man ), Morgan Freeman (Invictus) en Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) in aanmerking. De reeds vijftienvoudig Oscargenomineerde Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia) neemt het in de categorie Beste actrice op tegen Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Helen Mirren (The Last Station), Cary Mulligan (An Education) en Gabourey Sidibe ( Precious).
