VPRO Television is a national public broadcasting company in the Netherlands. It has a long-standing tradition in the production of political, social, and cultural documentaries throughout the world.

Backlight, VPRO‘s weekly, 50-minute, current affairs/ documentary program, balances on the edge of cinematography and journalism. It focuses on our real (globalized) world in which economies, societies, and cultures seek a new equilibrium. Backlight aims to grasp the quintessence of prominent trends and developments. In a tireless attempt to understand the real world of today, the program shifts between two modes of communication: on the one hand it provides in-depth analysis of new developments by leading intellectuals, politicians, and business leaders; on the other, it applies image-driven storytelling techniques, capturing the effects of these changes on the daily lives of the real world‘s citizens.
