Op de vraag of hij weleens nuchter optreedt, antwoordde hij: “The last one was 2003, and I only remember it because I was put on an ill-suited Comedy Central tour doing colleges where there was no alcohol in the crowd and if you're drinking in the stage, that'll be odd. A non-drinking audience is the worst thing imaginable”.

Op zijn 23e begon Doug Stanhope zijn carrière als stand-up comedian op een open-mic-avond in Las Vegas. "I was 23 with a mullet doing lots of jerk-off material", vertelde hij The Guardian. Zes maanden later was hij huiskomediant in de comedyclub in Phoenix. Sindsdien werkte hij ook als presentator van diverse televisieprogramma’s waaronder het comedyprogramma The Man Show (Comedy Central).

Stanhope's t-shirt verwijst naar de Libertarian Party
De partij vat zijn streven samen in een bondige slogan: ‘Minimale overheid. Maximale vrijheid’ . Stanhope wilde in 2008 presidentskandidaat zijn voor de libertarians, maar door beperking van de federale kiescommissie ging dit uiteindelijk niet door. In het eerder genoemde interview met The Guardian blikt hij terug op zijn kandidaatstelling. 'It seemed like a funny thing to do! I thought we could maybe get on the ticket of the Libertarian Party. But people were either amused or horrified at the idea of me representing their party (…) It made me realise the sheer breadth of all the shit I don't know about politics. I thought I'd study, so I read an actual book called Politics For Dummies or something but I just couldn't retain it all, it was like school.'
